Sangli is the city and district headquarters of Sangli district in Maharashtra, India. The official language of Sangli is Marathi. The total population of Sangli is approximately 28.2 lakhs, and the area is about 8,578 km².
The original name of Sangli is Sahagalli. Sahagalli is the combination of two Marathi words Saha means six, and Galli means lanes. These two words describe the early street plan, which later shortened to Sangli. Sangli is famous for turmeric trade, grapes production and sugar factories. Sangli has more than 30 sugar factories.
