Gaighata is a community development block that forms an administrative division in the
Bangaon subdivision of North 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. The
subdivision is situated at an altitude of 12 m above sea level. It is spread across an area
of 204 square kilometres. As per the 2011 Census of India, Gaighata CD Block had a total
population of 330,287, of which 265,526 were rural and 64,761 were urban. The effective
literacy rate was 83.32% for the 6+ population.
The main occupation of people in Gaighata, like in the rest of North 24 Parganas, is primary
activities such as farming, and agriculture. fishing. The average size of agricultural
landholdings is about 3.2 Bighas. North 24 Parganas is one of the less economically backward
districts of West Bengal, but there is extreme poverty in the southern half of the District.
The climate is tropical, like the rest of the Gangetic West Bengal. It is also characterised by the Monsoon, which lasts from early June to mid-September sometimes in October. NH 12 connects the district with the northern and southern region of the state and its sub road NH 112 connects the district headquarter Barasat with the border town Bangaon and Petrapole, the largest land port of India.
