Forest Research Institute is a Natural Resource Service training institute of the Indian
Council of Forestry Research and Education in the Dehradun district in the Indian state of
Uttarakhand. It is an institution in the field of forestry research in India for Indian
Forest Service cadres. It is among the oldest institutions of its kind and was established
in 1878 as the British Imperial Forest School by Dietrich Brandis. In the year 1991, it was
officially declared a deemed university by the University Grants Commission. The Forest
Research Institute campus hosts the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, the staff college
that trains officers selected for the Indian Forest Service.
Forest Research Institute and the college campus is a town between Kaulgarh in the north and
the Military Academy in the south. The Tons river flows through the western part of this
area. FRI has a fantastic museum too. This campus is the ultimate destination for a lot of
