Dr. Ambedkar Nagar is a cantonment in the Indore district in the Indian state of Madhya
Pradesh. This place was renamed Dr. Ambedkar Nagar in 2003 by the Government of Madhya
Pradesh. According to Census 2011, this location has 85,023 people with a male and female
population of 54% and 46%, respectively.
The Treaty of Mandsaur between English and the Holkars, the Maratha Maharajas of
Indore, resulted in the establishment of this cantonment town in 1818 by John Malcolm. On
December 21, 1817, John Malcolm's army defeated the Holkars of the Maratha Confederacy at
the Battle of Mahidpur. The Holkars' capital relocated from Maheshwar on Narmada's banks to
Indore following this fight.
During the British Raj, Mhow was the headquarters of the 5th (Mhow) Division of the
Southern Command.
