Chalakudy is a municipal town situated on the banks of the Chalakudy River in the Thrissur
district of Kerala state in India. As per the 2011 census report, Chalakudy municipality had
a population of 49,525, of which 23,744 are males while 25,781 are females. The literacy
rate of Chalakudy City is 97.03% higher than the state average of 94.00%. The town is spread
across an area of about 25.23 square kilometers. The city is situated at an altitude of 1250
m above sea level. As of the 2001 India census, Changanassery had 5093 with 2498 males and
2595 females. As per the 2011 Census, Changanassery has an average literacy rate of 96.4%,
higher than 74%.
The district of Chalukady holds great importance geographically. It is home to
Athirappilly Falls, which is one of India's highest waterfalls. It is the base camp for
travelers to Athirappilly Falls and Vazhachal Falls. Chalakudy lies on National Highway 544
and is located about 47 km (23 mi) north of the city of Kochi and 30 km (19 mi) south of
Thrissur.

The town is connected to the North-South Corridor National Highway (India) via the four-lane National Highway 544, previously NH 47.[87] The highway traverses through the entire length and breadth of the city from different points and provides access to nearby cities such as Kochi, Palakkad, and Coimbatore. NH 544 provides two main exit points at Mannuthy and bypasses Thrissur city and Thalore.
